The Conficker worm continues to be one of the most prevalent threats facing PCs running Windows, according to a new security report published by Microsoft.
For the first six months of the year, Microsoft found that more than 5 million computers were infected with Conficker, according to its latest Security Intelligence Report.
Twitter warned users Tuesday of a new phishing scam on the social networking site.
It's the latest in a series of scams that have plagued the site over the past year, designed to trick victims into giving up their user names and passwords.
A massive bot-based attack has been hitting Facebook users, with nearly three-quarters of a million users receiving fake password reset messages, according to security researchers.
The attack, which began Monday afternoon, according to e-mail security vendor Cloudmark, targets Facebook users with a spoofed message that claims recipients' Facebook passwords have been reset as a security measure. The messages, which come bearing subject lines such as "Facebook Password Reset Confirmation," include a file attachment that supposedly contains the new password.
In fact, the attached .zip file includes a Trojan downloader, dubbed "Bredlab" by some antivirus companies, "Bredolab" by others. The downloader grabs a variety of malware from hacker servers, including fake security software, or "scareware," and installs attack code and rogue antivirus applications on the compromised PCs.

"I just have to say that I am very pleased with VIPRE so far. I just finished deploying the agent across most of my desktops and I had the agent set to run a scheduled quick scan nightly at 9:00PM. Within 12 minutes of the scan starting I had 15 notification emails from VIPRE stating that it had found numerous infections on machines (most of which were within 3 minutes of the start time). Mind you, ALL of my PCs had Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 on them before I deployed VIPRE, and they all ran scheduled scans, and none of them turned up any of these infections. Also, know that I am excluding cookies and some other items (like VNC), so these reported infections were truly infections and not false positives. Again, I am very happy with VIPRE performance and deployment thus far, and I hope to continue to receive this level of performance for the remainder of our support contract and far beyond. Please pass along my thanks and appreciation to the development staff and everyone who makes the VIPRE software possible. Thanks again. -- D.S. Senior Systems Engineer.
A recent McAfee service pack led to systems being rendered unbootable, according to posts on the security giant's support forums.
The mandatory service pack for McAfee's corporate Virus scanning product, VSE 8.7, was designed to address minor security bugs but instead tagged windows system files as malware. The software update was issued on 27 May and pulled on 2 June, after problems occurred. Users were advised to keep the patch if they'd already installed it in a low-key announcement on McAfee's knowledge base.
We now require a College/University Email Address in order to process Student Licenses 24 April 2009
As of today, we will require a college/university email address for any Student Licenses. We will be updating the Student License product catalogue as quickly as we can so that we request this information at the time of order.
In the meantime, anyone placing an order for Student Licenses where an educational email address is not supplied will be asked to confirm their educational email address and their licenses will be emailed to that address.

Site Rejig In Progress 20 April 2009
We've started the process of updating the site as we try to make the menus more intuitive.
We now have a new "VIPRE Enterprise" section off the main menu on the left which will contain all the pricing information you could ever need, Corporate, Government, Educational, New Licenses, Upgrades, Renewals and Competitive Upgrades.
Over the next month, we'll be doing this with all products on this site.
As you can appreciate, there are quite a few products so the update will take a little time.
We'll also be adding a new SonicWall section as we replace our BizGuardian firewall solution.
Thanks for your patience.
